When a variable name begins with a special character like a number and the VALIDVARNAME=ANY option is specified prior to PROC IMPORT, an underscore is added in front of the variable name by PROC IMPORT instead of honoring the VALIDVARNAME=ANY option.

For example, a variable name of 3bla should be '3bla'n. However, it is created as _3bla when you use PROC IMPORT to read in the external file when the VALIDVARNAME=ANY option is specified.

There is currently no circumvention for this issue.
